Lea Sievertsen – Final Presentation
Residence Fund for Young Design

The Berlin graphic designer Lea Sievertsen (b. 1990) is the third resident in the programme Fund for Young Design at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, established by the Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen. Her final project “A Seat at the Table”, to be presented at MK&G from 5 Mai to 19 June 2022, comprises a wall of images, a video and original works from the collection. During her residency from October 2021 to April 2022, Sievertsen explored historical representations of female artists and designers, pursuing the question of what conditions, spaces and opportunities are needed to be able to work creatively. Inspired by Virginia Wolf’s essay “A Room of One’s Own,” she questioned her own work situation and delved into the MK&G collection with this issue in mind. What can graphics, photography and selected objects such as a desk tell us? What is the connection between historical portrayals of women and contemporary working conditions? Which gaps become evident in the collection – which images and objects cannot be found there?
